Hello! I'm a free spirit who loves new adventures and is passionate about the energy that clean, organic food gives us. I have adopted a conglomerate of nutrition philosophies and sort of took a grain of salt from each one - I'm not raw, not paleo, not vegitarian - but I'd say a mixture of the three. I don't eat meat (chicken, beef, pork), although I do eat raw fish once in a great while (must be wild, never frozen, etc). I eat eggs (cage free) and of course my staple is plant based veggies. Well - my diet has evolved over the years and it will likely continue to evolve towards raw. I spend much time researching holistic food & health - so I'm sure we can have discussions on this for hours.

Otherwise, I like to run - run stairs, trails, etc. Swim, ride my bike to the beach - I also sail quite often, learning how to captain a larger vessal to take around central america. I also like cars - but my pull towards nature has somewhat taken my interest away from cars.

Generally my views are different from the collective. In most situations I am the one eating consciously, thinking outside the box to solve problems and challenging the status quo - not in ignorance though - with deliberate thought, curiousity and likely understanding. I'm not a fan of anything that takes away individualism or freedom - which I feel is most places we turn these days. I'm comfortable with my choices and respected by my peers.

For a living, I am a geek translator. I'm in enterprise technology - but we can leave it at I sell things. Mainly complex solutions around accounting applications, data centers, disaster recovery, cloud computing & blah blah - but it is fun - I have an awesome team I work with and it allows me options to travel and eat the cleanest food I can find.

When I asked my friends what I should write, they said I should write that I am a goofball.

I don't think that quite does it either...

so they took turns immitating me for 15 seconds each. There was a lot of laughing, because I do laugh a lot, and much silliness as well...

I wasn't surprised to see that my friends see me as so goofy and animated, but I guess (from in here) it all seems much more serious...I am often pondering this mystery and the wonder we are swimming in.

I'm Quirky, open, earthy, compassionate, and adventurous. Love the smell of coffee, peanut butter,and my favorite..... sandalwood. Have a fairly new passport with no stamps, so gonna have to fix that soon. Love to cook, but also enjoy preparing raw foods. I hike several days a week, and just bought a hobie tandem mirage kayak!!!!! Super stoked. A friend just loaned me the book "meditation for dummies", but with the NBA playoffs on right now, it's getting neglected. I will admit that I'm kind of a strange mix; I will do yoga in the morning after work, and then go home, have a beer and watch hockey. Sort of a health nut, but also love onion rings. I work graveyard at an emergency animal hospital, but plan on going back to school to study nutrition. Divorced for 7 years now, have a killer kid, and still believe that somedody who really fits me, will cross my path. I come from someplace else (nowhere sexy, mind), and typically have an easier time relating to other expatriates, people who are curious about the world, and/or do not have a tendency to talk to “foreigners” as if they were collectively hearing impaired. In case you missed it, I should probably accentuate that I am very tall, which, I believe, says nothing about me, but most people I encounter (or just pass by) appear to find pointing it out imperative. I don't understand how someone can be happy living a mundane or self centered life without regard or care for other people or without depth, meaning, ambitions and goals.

Many times i feel like I'm a bit different than a lot of people around me (in a good way), especially people in LA and while I have many friends and acquaintances I don't feel that very many people "get" me but that's okay;) I also think a bit out of the box and don't feel the need to follow the latest trends. I enjoy staying in or with good company on Fri and Sat nights and prefer going out during the week or weekend afternoons when things are more low key. I'll never stand on line to get into some cool hip bar, I think that's so silly. I love being out for a run early morning or doing something productive early! When eating out, I usually prefer an ethnic, vegan or mom & pop type spot rather than a tourist trap that's loud & crowded.

I love making the most of everyday, even on vacation! I enjoy getting up early to explore, be outdoors and do things. Definitely enjoy kicking back and chilling as well, esp when in a relationship so I need someone who can be both adventurous, energetic and spontaneous but also romantic, nurturing and relaxed cuz I try to keep a good balance of both.

I've got a lot of energy. I think it's the intensely healthy lifestyle that I lead. Last summer, as part of my job, I hiked alone for over 500 miles in the Trinity Alps. That kind of intimate connection to the environment also keeps your intuitions on track. I have a tangible bond with my acreage abutting the Alps (where I have my primary residence). I've lived here for 30 years, and it is a veritable off-the-grid paradise. Turbines on my creek provide all of the modern amenities, and the 1/4-mile walk to my house ensures privacy and an unfettered connection with nature... I'm a very balanced and centered guy --not necessarily easy to do any more in our culture! Although I checked the "Buddhist" box, I'm not involved with organized religion; Thich Nhat Hahn's teachings feel right. The five basic precepts resonate for me.... In October. a Vipassana meditation retreat knocked my socks off! I was raised Catholic, attending Catholic schools until ninth grade--excluding 3-5th grades at a DOD school in Bahrain--when we moved to Oahu. (Both islands were amazingly culturally diverse and taught me a LOT about being a minority.) I like to learn about "others" on Earth ... and where ever else they may be. ;)

Life has been nomadic--dad was a Navy SeaBee (I loved growing up around construction sites!) and mom's part Gypsy. My journalism degree--after working in the industry for about a decade--includes credits from universities in three different states. I've worked most jobs a young, passionate photographer could want. (And a couple she wouldn't. =)*) Now it pleases me to do vegan advocacy/animal rights activities!

My other favorite activities include...being in nature, camping, swimming, thinking, reading, motorcycling, dancing, taking pictures, generally making life an adventure, and meditating...yet I manage not to do any of them frequently enough!

I found these questions so I thought I'd put them up here with my answers. I really liked answering them:

1. What moves, inspires, drives you. What are you goals, mistakes and fears?

Goals: To backpack all over this continent and if that goes well the planet, if not, decide on another way to travel and explore all over; to learn to speak spanish, french, german, latin, italian; to design and build a plant nursery; to design and build and run a spa/retreat center; to build a home and garden; to swim at the south fork of the Trinity River as much as I wish; to help my mother sister and father in some way; to experience deep intamacy, love, acceptance, and gratitude with myself and then with my mate; to continue to learn about all kinds of things; to write books; to create a web page. I have very specific ideas about the wellness center, the nursery, the books, and the web page.

Mistakes: I would no longer call these "mistakes" but decisions that were not life serving but necessary to help me find out who I am and who I am not: smoked when I was younger; married a man who later abused me, but who helped me bring two beautiful children to this planet; allowed myself to become an emotional eater; was not always loving to and appreciative of my children. I suppose there are more but those are some of the biggies.

Fears: pain coming to my children or my sister; new adventures(afraid but excited, compelled, and determined); meeting new people. After writing this it doesn't feel true to me. I have been getting better at appreciating the moment, being grateful and being loving. When I am in this frame of mind I have no fears.

Water, shelter, nourishment, sunshine, love, learning, growing and giving. If I am lacking the first four help me to seek them out; love- well lets explore that together; learning, growing and giving - I hope we have some of the same needs on this one, if not being supportive. (see above)

These would only be wished for if you allow me to be there for you in the same way.

That was fun, now here more things that are interesting to me:

I love being in nature. Different cultures and geographic regions fascinate me. I intend to build a sustainable alternative house. I have a piece of property in Trinity County. After spending much time there, I'm no longer sure that is the place I will build. I'm very spiritual but not religious. I'm interested in learning to live a more healthy life, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Good conversations. I love people, although I'm more inclined to low key social situations. It is important to me to develop a friendship before any romance. I believe relationships started in this way is what makes them last.

I love to eat veggies that I've grown myself. I read a lot; I like going for walks; listening to music (smooth jazz, classical, classic rock, swing, reggie, standards, folk, and celtic;) having dinner with friends. I love swimming at a quiet spot on the south fork of the Trinity River. Camping; travelling and exploring; and drawing plans for an alternative and sustainable house and permaculture landscaping. I'm interested in preventative health, such as healthy eating, positive attitude, gratitude, those types of things. I would love to get more involved in projects that improve the quality of life for all.

I am a vegan primarily in search of compassionate fellow-animal lovers- those who genuinely care for the welfare of animals and strive to live ethically for them and hence to make the world a better place for both animals and humans. I set considerable store by cooking and baking healthy (esp. low-fat and raw) vegan food and sharing it with people. I am a research scholar and lecturer (in English and Medieval Studies) at an Ivy League university but moving to a research university in California (LA) to take up a tenure-track position but I plan to spend time in NYC, Toronto and parts of Oxford (I tend to get over 5months' research leave to travel)

I tend to see connections between the ethics informing my care for animals and that informing my care for humans. More specifically, I have begun to adapt my vegan thought to include a strong non-patriarchal 'feminist' component - one that challenges mainstream and/or heterosexist/normative models of relationships. I deeply value relationships/romances/forms of intimacy built upon a sustained ethics of abiding non-possessive care and deep mutual trust. Such care means above all a recognition of the "otherness" or "uniqueness" of the person(s) one respects/loves within a relationship. That is, one cares for others not to expect something exclusive in return but for the joy of reciprocal caring and loving...More on this should you be interested...More broadly, veganism and the burgeoning thinking around it has led me question sedimented and conventional conceptual boundaries between human as well as between human and non human animals. Hence, my interest in non-human agency, posthumanism - esp. Cary Wolfe...At the same time, my veganism has led me to revisit and discover (much to my dismay) the ways in which writers I admire in my field have exploited the "animal" or animality as a means of foregrounding the human....

I value conversations on a range of topics (from animal welfare to lesbianism, from Latin classics to T.S. Eliot, from the politics of food to the problems with heteronormative institutions, from intersectional work across disciplines such as critical animal studies, sociology, and ethics). I enjoy conversations that challenge my ever evolving value-system and present me with valid and relevant counterclaims. In addition to English, I can speak German fluently, can read and write and speak Italian haltingly. I can read Latin (and do it for my profession) as well.

I have been researching perfume or smelling as a way of knowing, remembering and relating to the world of beings human and non-human. I have been looking at among other things the perfume industry (its historical links to the spice and leather industry) not just in the context of vast global commercial brand-names but , more importantly, in relation to small local 'atelier' environmentally friendly producers (such as Le Labo and Anthropologie). One of my goals is to see the intersections of the ethical and the aesthetic (specially with regard to animals, human labor) in the production and distribution of perfumes....

Describing oneself is never an easy task as none of us fit perfectly into any one square box, but none the less, it is a requirement of life to do things at times we would rather not. I would like to think of myself as down to earth and easy going; funny and intelligent enough to think for myself. I try and lead and active and healthy life as your health is your most valuable material asset. I have never been religious per se but feel very spiritual. I was raised in a positive, nurturing environment that stressed love over anger and acceptance over hate. Artist/ecologist/builder, jack of all trades, single parent of my 12 year old daughter, Willow, whom I brought back to California from a difficult marriage in the Philippines in 2003 after 15 years on the water in South-East-Asia living a life of adventure, art and education. Now involved in one of the most interesting and rewarding experiences of a lifetime, raising Willow. We're settled on a nice piece of land north of San Francisco and are hoping to find a partner to move into a new phase in life with.

I try to live up to the better values of the late 60's-TRUTH, PEACE, JUSTICE, LIBERTY & LOVE-that evolved into the environmental movement, feminism, anti-globalization, anti-militarism, the Occupy Wall Street movement, etc.

Though I might have but a high school diploma, my education goes far beyond and will never end. It includes some eight years at UC Berkeley, where my family has gone for generations, at first studying architecture, art and design, dropping out in '69 to sail through the Golden Gate on the "Kialoa" as part of a good crew of friends and headed south. I returned to Berkeley seven years later and, while remodeling a building on UN Plaza inside and out, creating law offices and a small restaurant on the ground floor, I began to audit classes back at the University in the Natural Resource Services department studying environmental issues, biology, forestry, ecology, etc. and getting involved in various movements dealing with social issues and a variety of other things, as my travels had given me more perspective and the incentive to study. I spent a year or so at San Francisco Art Institute in the late 60s (between UC and the Pacific Ocean) and have studied horticulture and other thing at various other schools in the Bay Area and beyond. I was a student and teacher at Fiberworks Center for the Textile Arts in Berkeley in the 80s and, with the help of my first wife, pursued a career in the art world. But it was my life on the water, sailing in Asia and Central America that has probably been my best teachers and I like to think I still learn something new every day from life itself. What can YOU teach me?

My first wife and I bought a house in Berkeley while I was working on that art career and, at the same time, worked for the East Bay Regional Parks. I got involved in the early years of the Permaculture movement in the mid 80s which eventually lead me to China to build the "Long Hai", to be used as a home while spreading the concepts of sustainable agriculture and appropriate technology in South East Asia and the Pacific 1988. For eight years I called Hong Kong home and was one of the founding members of Permaculture Asia Ltd. . Also, in Hong Kong I became the Traditional Chinese Maritime Technology Institute through my work with the "Long Hai" and did work in archeology, art and on many environmental projects. Too many long stories. Ask me to tell you some.

I'm a atavistic, progressive, pragmatic dreamer; a spontaneous planner of functional fantasy drifting through my years of solo parenting, hoping, at this, what seems to be another time of transition, to meet the YOU I'm looking for. I'm a walking contradiction in need of the stability a good partner can bring. About me, I've been vegetarian since leaving home town for San Diego in 1992 and try to keep the dairy/eggs to a minimum, especially at home. Ok, so here's what happened...I was strolling in the bulk asile of the local organic grocery store (pondering pearled barley...hey, it was a slow day) when a nice looking guy approached me. As he started chatting me up, I noticed his clothes...black pants...big white jacket....boring dresser? As we talked on I noticed some red stuff on his jacket...messy eater who likes ketsup? Oh no, my friend, it was the butcher! The butcher!! LOL. So I said, "No hablo inlges"...no just kidding...I just graciously ducked outta there, and said to myself, "Ok, the universe is sending a sign...find someone with similar values! Please!" So, here I am.

Other than liking pearled barley here are some things about me...I am very active, sitting still can be hard to do sometimes! I am a teacher by preofession...mainly teaching fitness and art to senior citizens (I love them! I have 100 grandparents!). I mention my work because it truly reflects who I am...I love to help, entertain and be active. Bringing someone a smile or hearing how my class helped them feel better makes my whole day.

I have been a vegan/vegetarian for 17 years...I love everything about it (except getting asked "What DO you eat?" LOL)...how I feel physically and mentally, and of course the moral, enviornmental, and economical aspects.

I've been vegan for 21 years. For me it's about a moral evolution. There is plenty of other food to eat without killing animals. I try to eat healthy and exercise. The human body was built to move. I am a bit confusing... I am a dreamer, but responsible. I take risks, but calculated ones. I am intrepid, but also cautious. I think I have a few contradictory characteristics. I'm not sure if this makes me interesting or just plain confusing. However, I am very down to earth. I could easily live in a one room studio if it was with someone I loved, as opposed to a 20 room mansion with someone I can't talk to. I love the outdoors, animals, and driving into the woods and pitching a tent. I am equally comfortable in an evening gown but would probably take my shoes off at the end of the night to run in the surf... should the situation present itself. I am looking to travel more , I have travelled some, but not enough. I would love to be fluent in spanish. I love all things old -- old houses, cars, clothing, books... Taking care of the earth/environment has been a part of my life function since the late 60's. Having a strong compassion/love of animals and caring for the environment led me to became a Vegetarian in 1979, then I became a Vegan in 1985 (over 32 years of no animal consumption or wearing any leather) & every day I enjoy/love living the life as a non-animal consuming human.

Also strive to do all I can to walk softly on this planet, by owning a Honda Civic Hybrid, riding my bike, walking, not drinking out of plastic bottles and recycling everything that I can along with eating mostly ORGANIC foods and supporting the local farmers markets (do not shop at any corporate grocery stores-except Trader Joe's) and local markets of Olivers and Community Market.

Love living in beautiful wine country north of the Golden Gate where I live alone in my own home with my loving Cockatiel companion Spike. Since 79 have gotten along very happily without having any TV reception/channels, so now I'm enjoying watching DVD's on a fantastic 52” flat screen surround sound home movie theater system.

In my free time I enjoy camping, kayaking, dancing, gardening, films, travel, silence, going to new & old places, playing outside every chance I get, exploring natures wonders (walking or hiking on the coast, mountains or wherever), meaningful conversations, bicycling (just for fun), a wide variety of music (blues, jazz, r&r, r&b, classical, world beat). Other interests include visiting art galleries & museums, reading, cooking (I’m good at it) meditating, yoga, environmental activism, photography (long time hobby), swimming, live theater, concerts (no big crowds) & volunteering, massage (give & receive) & I’m always interested in new adventures and sharing what the other person enjoys as well.

Also enjoy being a boy at times with a love for animation (the old classics and some of the new ones), trains, picnics, & having as much fun as I can.

As well as being a big lover of the land and animals, big trees, high quiet places with views of the horizons, changing colors of the sky, ocean sounds on the shore, quiet scenic lakes, along with the wind through tall grass and twilight walks brings lots of joy & happiness to me.

I'm a software professional working in the Bay area. I like folk and "classic rock" music, attending concerts, reading, hiking, movies (Hollywood-style, foreign, and independent), cooking, visiting new places, and meeting people. I believe that any relationship has to be two-sided - I'm more than willing and eager to work on the relationship as long as the other person is willing to make a similar effort. I expect this even of my male friends. I haven't forgotten that making a living should not keep me from making a life. I tend to be shy initially (actually reserved) but I nurture friendships well. I'm originally from the Midwest but I've been living in L.A. for quite a while. I'm outgoing, and generally like people. Bringing out the best in my date, or anyone I meet is important.

I love going to see live music of all kinds, it'd be great if you did, too. I tend to like rock/blues/indie kinds of music, but also like reggae, soul, and some classical and jazz..also a big fan of KCRW. Some of my favorite bands include: The Black Keys, White Stripes and any other Jack White project, Arcade Fire, Wilco, Phoenix, Foo Fighters, The Band, Rolling Stones, Jimi, really, any music played well live.

Besides music I'm also a fan of movies, theatre, comedy. As far as animals, I'm much more of a dog type, although I do get along fine with felines, too. I used to work in a National Wilderness are so I love the outdoors.

I like to read newspapers, non-fiction, mysteries, etc. I like indie films and movies with substance, but I also like mindless entertainment.
Food: I'm veggie and like all kinds of food Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Mexican, Italian, Deli, fancy or dive restaurant--Taco truck. If it's good, it's good.

I co-teach kinder and 1st special education at school based on full inclusion in the gen. ed. classroom regardless of a child's ability. In my free time I like to exercise, learn, and enjoy all sorts of comedy. I watch shows like nova, frontline, the daily show, family guy, SNL, and like to talk about such things. I am a nerd. My sense of humor is funny to some, obnoxious to others, and often funny and obnoxious at the same time. But of course some people don't get me at all! It helps that most of the time I’m telling my jokes to 5-year-olds. I’m more of a homebody than one who hits the scene. When I stay in I like watching the before mentioned programs, docs, or other movies, doing a crossword, or singing along to my friend's banjo and making music videos with the result. No one has ever accused me of being a singer. Also, I've made two movies in the past that bombed when I submitted them to film festivals. I suppose creating and editing these visual and auditory masterpieces is the closest thing I have to a passion, but I don’t think I do it enough for it to qualify. When I go out it's the usual options around town: coffee shop, bar/club, comedy, movies, ballgame, dinner with friends, a party, etc. I’m playful, sarcastic, and exercise a healthy dose of cynicism (I call it staying grounded in reality). Somehow I turned out to be a misanthrope who likes to help people? I don't get it either. I cater to some primitive urges by watching some sports. My less desirable traits are: I can be too sensitive, overly analytical, and sometimes worrisome if I don’t guard against it. I can seem or be insensitive to others (usually a result of humor gone bad, or defending myself because my overly sensitive self got hurt). I’d like to think I’ve gotten better at watching my tongue. If a squabble happens, when cooler heads prevail I am always willing to own and apologize for my mistakes. In terms of the depth of my involvement in the vegan lifestyle, I’ve moved away from my ultra do-gooder ways of my early-mid 20s and now just try to lead the best life I can, trying to look out for myself in the process (no more martyrdom!). One way that looks is me eating a vegan diet but struggling to find vegan shoes that fit my wide feet! My perspective these days is “every little bit helps” rather than “all or nothing.” I feel my best way to interest people in being more plant based is to keep quiet and lead by example. I really want to show people that they can be healthy and thrive off the diet. As you can see from the picture, I’ve put on 15 pounds of mostly muscle while lifting on vegan nutrition! I hope to keep that going so I can keep breaking the myths.

I'm from Philly but have lived in London, Israel, Washington DC, Wilmington DE, Los Angeles, Micronesia, San Francisco, Munich and Saudi Arabia. I'm vegetarian because I don`t like killing animals. I also don't wear leather or use products that contain dead animal. But I'm not militant - many of my friends eat meat. That being said a number of friends and my parents have become vegetarian, mostly for health reasons. My mother has reversed her heart disease through a vegetarian diet and other friends have lost weight and gained energy. I love being outdoors and am an avid walker and runner - 96 marathons - and enjoy bicycling skiing and rollerblading.
