Living a principled life of meaning, purpose, simplicity, and growth is my goal. Originally from New Jersey, I went to college (Pomona) and beyond in southern California but have spent most of my adult life in southern Arizona. I find the Sonoran Desert to be magical, and I hike a lot, but you can see beauty in most places if your mind is open to it. The beauty of any place, though, derives mainly from the people who populate it. Character traits I value include "compassion and altruism, placidness, patience, and slowness to anger, and abundant loving-kindness and truthfulness" (Exodus 34:6), as well as reverence for all life. The latter includes wearing a mask, to protect both others and myself, during the pandemic! Practical examples of these traits include: being mindful of the needs of the disabled and the vulnerable (e.g., using larger font sizes!); avoiding ableist language; uplifting others; and giving people the benefit of the doubt. I look for ways to help others, although, whatever I do, I try to avoid self-serving feelings like self-validation and pride.
With my scientific background, I'm mostly a left-brained person, but I try to exercise the right half as well, although I fall a little short of being a polymath. I appreciate the contribution of art to life and especially the creativity behind it, although I like to view it not just for its aesthetic beauty but also as an extension of the person behind it. Jewish ethical values (which are mostly universal in nature) and teachings inform and guide me in all aspects of living -- including diet! I've been vegan for 35 years. I don't engage in social media, which I feel is harmful to society and unbecoming, and try hard not to let technology control my life. I've striven to bring Jewish medicine and the values it represents to the world via the eponymous website. In essence, it's a philosophy that regards medicine as a sacred vocation whose practitioners view their work as a calling, shunning any motivation that smacks of "what's in it for me?" The goal is to make the world safe not for democracy but for medical ethical meritocracy and, thereby, for patients. In that capacity, I also fill the urgent need for a source of evenhanded, authoritative information on vegetarian nutrition.
Finally, two parallel philosophical observations from two great traditions on how to gain the most satisfaction from your food:
"When the food inside ourselves is blessed by our having led an upright life, we feel satiated even after eating just a small amount" (Rashi, rabbinic scholar).
"When you have love, even water alone will be satiating, but, when you're lacking love, there is no food that will satiate you" (Chinese proverb [Youqíng yinshuibao, wúqíng shífànji]).

I am outgoing, friendly and enjoy doing social things when with a partner. I find when I am single I tend to stay home more, which I also enjoy very much. Movies, hiking, good conversation and being outdoors are a few things I enjoy doing. Most often I am found at home because my property has become a mini-sanctuary for several species of birds. Plus I share my home with rescued cats and am active in TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return).
Spending my time outside with my sanctuary residents is fantastic. Plus it is so beautiful here and the weather is great.
My serious side also involves maintaining my health. I worked as a pharmacist, but I am more of an anti-pharmacist! Prevention and acquiring good habits are the keys to a vital life. I worked in hospitals and know that western medicine can play an important role as well.
I was raised in Brooklyn, NY, lived in NJ and now live in the southwest since 2004. Love the climate here, preferring sunny dry days to the cloudiness and humidity of the northeast.

What would be great is if I can meet someone that wants to video chat. We have this great thing at our disposal that allows people to get to know each other in the comfort of our home. A person can create a Facebook page just for video chatting and it can be called something that doesn't expose any personal information. You can call it "video" or "Chatter" or "Bumblebee"... whatever you want to call it... and it creates a safe way to get to know each other. When I've video chatted with friends, it's almost as good as being there. We get up and make food and we still can hear each other even when we're out of sight of the camera. It's great.

Independent, partial to books (particularly literature but lately quite a bit of non fiction in an attempt to come to some understanding of the forces that are warping us), walkabouts, gardening, filming, drawing, swimming in the sea, news, independent and foreign films and music, travel, and, yes, yoga. I vote and sometimes work on campaigns. Every once in a while I eat a fish but I'm not proud of it. Raw food and organic veggies, green juice and other goody goody food makes me feel energetic. I am trying to put my house back together now that I've gotten down to a blank slate. Oh, enough about me; I hear an echo. What about you?

Hmmm...I'm a very creative person. At times an introvert at other times an extrovert. I love being in the moment and having fun. I can be spontaneous, jumping in the car with an idea and just take it from there or plan things alittle more thoroughly. I like the idea of homebase, to travel to and from. I'm a beach lover, and will be headed back to the sea soon. I love listening to music, going to see live music, dancing, making things, gardening, documentaries, volunteering, riding my bike, clothes, travel, alternative/sustainable housing, heathy living, herb, lots of things...all in a balance
I've been pretty free-spirited. I haven't been married and now some people I know are getting divorced. I think when you're more mature, you're more grounded in who you are, and more likely to be content...just a theory...
